   SPECIALITY & RESEARCH FIELD OF INTEREST

   Protein Kinases and Phosphatases in T-cell Signaling, Autoimmunity, 

   and Inflammation-induced Diseases

 Tse-Hua Tan has made significant contributions to the research fields of cancer research, signal transduction, and T cell-mediated diseases. He made a seminal discovery that mutations of the tumor suppressor gene p53 lead to the activation of its oncogenic activity. In particular, Dr. Tan’s group is among the first to demonstrate the critical role of JNK in apoptosis. His highly cited paper in 1996 is the first report indicates that sustained activation of JNK is responsible for apoptosis. Dr. Tan’s team has cloned and characterized multiple novel signaling molecules particularly MAP4K family kinases (HPK1/MAP4K1, GLK/MAP4K3, HGK/MAP4K4) and protein phosphatases (JKAP/DUSP22, DUSP14, PP4) that regulate the JNK-MAPK cascade. Dr. Tan’s current research focuses on studying the roles of MAP4K family kinases and DUSP family phosphatases in T-cell signaling and inflammation-induced human diseases, particularly autoimmune diseases, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
